Q: I know my car has an anti-lock brake system, but how exactly does it help me in an emergency? - Tracy
A: Hi Tracy,
In an emergency, firmly apply and maintain continuous pressure on the brake pedal while continuing to steer away from the obstacle. Anti-lock brake systems use sophisticated sensors to automatically pump the brakes up to 18 times per second. The main benefit of anti-lock brake systems is that it does not allow the front wheels to lock, which is what causes loss of steering control. The most important part is to steer normally and don't jerk the wheel even though that's the natural thing to do. With ABS the car will respond to steering input and go off to the side, and not slide into an accident.
