Q: Everytime I buy tires for my car my husband tells me I buy bad tires, and that I should invest more money in the tires I put on my car. I don't understand why it is so important what kind of tires I put on my car. Aren't they all the same?
- Lydia
A: Hi Lydia,
No matter how good of an engine your car has, in the end it all comes down to the tires and how they can alter your cars performance. Remember, tires are your car's only contact with the road. Here's a few basic things you should look for when you are choosing tires:
- Make sure you put the correct size on your car. Putting the wrong size tire on your car can be a serious safety issue. If you are unsure of your size, you can find it in your owner's manual, or on a placard on the side of your driver's side door.
- Make sure your tires are meant for the season you are driving in. You should never drive on summer tires in the winter, or winter tires in the summer. A good compromise is to put all season tires on your car, but they do not perform as well in the winter as winter tires do.
- Buy a tire from a well known company, not a knock off. Go with names you know (Firestone, Bridgestone, Continental, etc.) The most popular tire brands have tread life warranties on their tires, meaning you can trust them to last a certain amount of time. Most big name companies also have a more affordable brand under them if you are unsure of the price.
